Glossary
Cancer
A general term for more than 100 different diseases that involve the uncontrolled increase of abnormal new cells. These cells form tumors that can destroy surrounding tissue and spread throughout the body.
Dermatologist
A doctor who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of skin problems.
Melanoma
A highly malignant type of skin cancer that arises in melanocytes, the cells that produce pigment. Melanoma usually begins in a mole.
PDQ Information System
Physician Data Query. PDQ is an online database developed and maintained by the National Cancer Institute. It is designed to make the most current, credible, and accurate cancer information available to health professionals and the public.
UPCI Clinical Trials
University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute. Clinical trials are designed to help health care professionals test new approaches to the diagnosis, treatment, or prevention of cancer.
